Not Your Average Tuesday Night in the Desert by Bryce Pereira

Roger Federer & Bryce Pereira

Roger Federer & Bryce Pereira on set at the Wilson shoot

Anyone who knows me, knows that Roger Federer is my all-time favorite tennis player. Hands down. No one else even comes close to Roger, in my mind. So imagine my surprise when I got a call from Tracy Singian of Wilson, asking me to be in a commercial with Roger Federer.

Roger Federer. ROGER FEDERER!! I couldn’t believe it. Tracy told me that Wilson had chosen 3 other juniors to be in the commercial as well. Wow. After I spoke with Tracy, I went back to my practice and I was fired up.

Finally, the day arrived. The commercial was being shot at the JW Marriott in Palm Desert. I had played on those courts lots of times in tournaments, so I was familiar with the atmosphere. I met Tracy last year when I did several videos for Wilson. I also knew Robin Fenlon, who filmed me for those videos. Both Tracy and Robin are cool and easy to work with so I knew the shoot was going to be fun.

But this was a much bigger production than last year’s shoot. When I arrived, I saw Roger through the fence, and there were lights and cameras and crew members everywhere. I went to change into my wardrobe and Tracy came over to say hi and said that there were media people there to do interviews with the juniors. Whoa. I was not prepared for that. My mom told me to stand up straight. Haha

I met Bogdan, the junior from Romania that had flown in for the shoot. I also met Ronnie, who is 4 years old. I already knew Raquel because we used to train together. All of us kids were so excited.

We warmed up a couple of courts over from where Roger was filming, and I saw him watching us. Then we got called over to meet him. I shook his hand. We did some scenes with a lot of action and Roger was having as much fun as we were. He talked to us between takes and I don’t know about the others, but I couldn’t believe how laid back and normal he was.

Then came the scene where I got to hit with Roger. I was so nervous. When the cameras started rolling, I heard Tracy tell my mom that I looked “tight.” Tracy was right. She talked to me and said to just have fun and let it go. We did a second take and I did. I felt really good about my backhand and I started to rip the ball. I was actually exchanging one-handed backhands with Roger Federer!!!!!!!!!!! The Greatest of All Time!! The ball was coming off of Roger’s racquet so cleanly. I had to focus extra hard so that I wouldn’t shank. Haha

After that scene, Roger asked me how long I had had a one-handed backhand. He was asking ME questions. How cool is that?! He told me what it was like going through juniors with a one-hander. I could definitely relate.

I think the commercial is going to be awesome.

I want to say thank you to Tracy, Robin, Mr. Muir, and the whole Wilson Team for giving me this opportunity. Everyone was so nice and they made the shoot so much fun. This was a night I will never, ever forget. It was a dream come true. I think back on it now and I still can’t believe it sometimes. I am very lucky. Life is good.

See you on the courts,

Bryce

The match, that featured an emotional, energetic crowd, was delayed in the third set, when the roof was closed for inclement weather. Federer, using his well-known precision and power, excelled during the remainder of the match to prevail, especially after a hard-fought game in the third set lasting almost twenty minutes.

“This win is a lifetime achievement,” said Federer. “To win such a hard-fought tournament against the best competitors just prior to the Olympics is incredibly special. I love playing here, especially because this is one of the most historic venues in the sport of tennis.”

“Federer’s win today speaks to his incredible legacy in the sport of tennis,” said Renaud Vallon, global tour director of Wilson Racquet Sports. “He combines his passion, with a fierce competitive spirit, while honoring the rich tradition of the sport of tennis.  He inspires all of us to be the best.”

Dimitrov continues to rise with Wilson BLX

Grigor Dimitrov swung his Wilson Six.One Tour BLX tennis racket to take his third straight ATP Tour Challenger title in Bangkok.

Dimitrov has now won 27 of his last 28 matches and is slated to reach another career high #136 on the ATP World Tour this week after gaining 80 ATP Tour points.

Dimitrov is starting to come into his own and prove why he is one of the top prospects of Wilson’s Next Gen.

We caught up with the 19 year old Dimitrov shortly after his win.

Q:What are your goals till end of year and 2011?

Grigor Dimitrov: Before the end of this year, I would like to get into Top 100 to get a jump start for Australian Open. And 2011 is gonna be an exciting year for me, so I’m looking forward to it. And of course, I have high expectations for my game and attack the Top 50, but most important is to stay healthy and in good condition.

Q: What is the picture/screen saver on your Blackberry?

Grigor Dimitrov: On my BB my picture is: black and white wallpaper over looking New York City made by Henri Silberman!

Q: What is your off court style?

Grigor Dimitrov: I don’t know from where should I start!! haha. I like clothes a lot. Actually in the end of the day, I’m trying to get off the tennis gear, when I go for dinner or have time off. Love stores, you can find all sorts of nice stuff in outlets and for sure in the expensive top brands stores. I personally like retro and rebel style, therefore my favorite designer was Alexander McQueen. All of his lines and models were different every time and you can find your style in it and you can express yourself in the way you want.

Q: Who would you like to see in concert?

Grigor Dimitrov: Well, I like all types of music but if I could really pick one, that would be the rapper Lil Wayne. I’ve been following him for a while and I like the background of his life and way to the top.

Q: What do you love about your Wilson Six.One Tour BLX?

Grigor Dimitrov: Simple: It’s THE BEST racket ever!!!

Wilson Next Gen player Grigor Dimitrov is on the rise. Swinging his Wilson Six.One Tour BLX tennis racket to victory, Dimitrov took home his 2nd ATP Tour challenger title in Bangkok and lift his ranking to a career high #146 on the ATP World Tour.

“It’s a great feeling to be touted as a player to watch,” said Dimitrov. “But winning is most important and my BLX racket is helping me do that.”

19 year old Dimitrov has been in great form through the summer, winning 4 ITF Pro Circuit Futures tournaments and the ATP Tour Geneva challenger on clay courts and then capturing his win in Bangkok on hard courts.

“Grigor has the great ability to play on every surface and has a lot variety in his game,” said Massimo Calvelli, Wilson Global Tour Director. “Sometimes those capabilities can take a bit longer to come together, so it’s nice to see Grigor already having success. We are excited to see what the future holds.”
